A Simple Guide to Community Tools for Media Professionals

This guide is for content creators and aspiring media professionals. It outlines the core purpose and best uses of Reddit and Discord for building a community.

REDDIT: The Content Billboard

Use your Subreddit (or relevant niche Subreddits) as your public-facing, search-friendly marketing arm.

GoalStrategyWhy It Works
New Viewer HookNative High-Value Clips. Don’t link a VOD. Post a short, self-contained clip directly into the sub. Put the full VOD link in the comments.Reddit algorithms reward native content and quickly push great clips to the top for discovery.
Search TrafficKeyword-Rich Titles. Title your posts exactly what people are searching for (e.g., “Best Tank Build for New Game X” or “My Guide to Mixer Audio”).Reddit threads are indexed by Google. Your helpful post is a permanent, passive way to find new viewers.
Community ContentEncourage User Submissions. Let your viewers post their own memes, fan art, and highlights. Moderators step back, not in.Makes the subreddit feel like a community hub, not just a promotion feed for the streamer.

Reddit Takeaway: Content first. Promotion second. It’s one of the engines that finds you new viewers while you’re offline.

DISCORD: The Clubhouse

Your Discord server is the most valuable asset for converting a one-time viewer into a daily regular and a Sub/VIP.

GoalStrategyWhy It Works
RetentionThe Best Notifications. Set up a bot to post a “🔴 LIVE NOW” notification (with an @everyone tag, used sparingly!) and the direct link.Twitch/YouTube notifications are unreliable. Discord delivers the ping and keeps them coming back.
Exclusive AccessRole Gating. Create specific roles for Subs/Tier 2/VIPs. Give those roles access to a private #Lounge or #Early-Access channel. This creates tangible value for supporting the channel and a clear membership hierarchy.
Deeper BondingHost Voice Events. Use Voice Channels for Viewer Games, Movie Nights, or Co-working.Moving the community from text chat to voice builds real social bonds, making the community “sticky.”

Discord Takeaway: This is where you make friends with your community. It’s the high-retention, high-engagement space.

The Media Arts Center is an attract school, not a pursuit school. There are no admissions advisors, enrollment counselors, or recruiters of any kind. Everyone who works here is a teacher experienced in subjects they know deeply. If you want to be chosen for one of six seats in an upcoming class the obligation is on you to read, reach out, apply, and tour. We are not a community college and do not accept everyone in the community.

We look for initiative, communication, and preparation in all applicants prior to consideration for acceptance.
